The Electrical Engineering students of B K Birla Institute of Engineering & Technology Pilani, visited the 132KV grid substation in Pilani as part of an industrial visit on 12-3-2026, accompanied by Assistant Professors Mr. Vikas Kumar and Mrs. Monika Shekhawat.
Director, Dr. B. K. Rout motivated the students and told them that such kinds of visits are very beneficial for placement drives and are also useful for their future career prospects. The visit was organized to provide students with practical insights into power transmission. Principal, Dr. Anil Kumar Sharma supported the documentation process and encouraged the students to undertake more industrial visits related to power generation and transmission, emphasizing their importance for future placements.
Junior Engineer Mr. Amit Karol provided a detailed explanation of the functioning of the 132KV substation. He demonstrated live components of the substation and elaborated on communication systems and the role of fiber optic cables. He explained how electricity is generated in power plants. After generation, the voltage is stepped up using transformers in order to minimize power losses during transmission. The electrical power is then transmitted through high-voltage transmission lines to the Grid Substation (GSS). After that, he described the different components used in a substation, such as circuit breakers, isolators, busbars, current transformers (CT), potential transformers (PT), lightning arresters, and protective relays. These components play an important role in the safe control and protection of the power system. He also demonstrated different types of transformers that convert voltage levels, for example from 33 kV to 11 kV for distribution purposes. Furthermore, he explained the internal parts of a transformer, including the windings, conservator tank, Buchholz relay, and the cooling system used to maintain the transformer’s temperature during operation. The visit was completed under the supervision of the Deputy Head of the Department, Dr. Rajesh Singh Shekhawat. Dr. Smita Pareek (HoD), along with Dr. Nishant Kumar, Mr. Anuj Sharma, and Mr. Surendra Kumar Sharma, played a significant role in organizing and making the visit successful.
